ON DAY 4 Zoe tried watching from the rail.

Within ten minutes, Isaac was dealt pocket aces, the best possible cards, which come, on average, once in every 221 hands. At a table with eight players, each of them can expect to see pocket aces about once every seven hours on average. Aces are most deadly when someone else has a premium hand to bet against them, which tends to happen less than half the time or, for each player, once every fourteen hours. This time, luckily for Isaac, someone else was holding an ace and a king, a combination that will beat 15 out of 16 random hands. Against AA, however, AK loses, after the rest of the cards are dealt, twelve in thirteen times. This was one of the twelve. Isaac won three hundred thousand chips, eliminating Joe Marcal, who got $45,915 for sixteenth place.

After a few more hands, the player in second place held pocket kings, a favorite against every hand but the one that Isaac happened to be holding, pocket aces, again. In a six-handed game, only one in every forty-four pairs of pocket kings will face pocket aces. This would be once every three hundred hours for a particular player or once, maybe, in ten tournaments. In that rare case, aces beat kings, after all the cards are dealt, four out of five times. Isaac won two million chips.

Isaac’s heater was exactly what Zoe had been wanting to see, better than anyone could have predicted, but the rail made her too nervous to stay put. To follow the game from the rail, without knowing the contents of any of the hands, was almost as boring as it was nerve-wracking. She walked to steady her nerves, came back, walked, came back, and then, finally, she decided to follow the match online from the bed in their room, where she felt less rattled. By nightfall, Isaac had doubled his stack again to more than nine million chips.
